Introduction to LFH

The past is never fully gone – it is absorbed into the present and future, it stays to shape what we are and what we do. (Sir William Deane, 1996).

Lessons from History (LFH) is an unique organization that develops creative solutions to complex problems for the business world. Most importantly LFH creates a transformation roadmap from the past to the present to the future. What makes LFH unique is our approach because we draw on Lessons-from-History, that is lessons from historical case studies. This adds another dimension to our approach to finding solutions by expanding the analysis and injecting creative ideas through concepts and practices that would likely not have been considered. We bring to the business world an inspiring and exciting approach to solving complex business problems which is part of the set of services and products that we provide:

The application of historical analyses remains an underutilized approach in management and organization studies (Clark and Rowlinson, 2004).

Our approach is grounded in extensive university level academic research and we use it to bring fresh thinking and ideas to the table:

History is the record of man’s steps and slips. It shows us that the steps have been slow and slight; the slips, quick and abounding. It provides us with the opportunity to profit by the stumbles and tumbles of our forerunners. Awareness of our limitations should make us chary of condemning those who made mistakes, but we condemn ourselves if we fail to recognize mistakes. (B. H. Liddell Harts)

What we offer

This consists of an extensive series of publications created by mulitiple LFH authors following the LFH approach. Using historical case studies these authors explore different subjects and themes, and in different combinations to highlight how solutions were found to complex problems. They then select relevant lessons from history and reinterpret these for today's business world. Publications go beyond books and include articles and academic papers.
There are four primary categories of services that range from management training through workshops, to keynote speaking and teaching, to consulting. The services are underpinned by the LFH approach that spans from historical research (business/projects case based), to the analysis of decision making in specific historical case studies, to using the past to predict the future in visioning and scenario planning, and to extrapolating best practices for contemporary use. These services are supported by academic research.

Underpinning the LFH services and products is a unique approach that draws on lessons from historical case studies. It uses two primary research methodologies, case study research and historiography advocated for researching historical management and project management. Both have been used extensively for LFH publications. A third supportive methodology interdisciplinarity has been used with more recent publications to guide the research. The LFH approach adds another dimension to how we find solutions to complex problems by expanding the analysis and injecting creative ideas through concepts and practices that would likely not have been considered. The LFH approach is based on extensive academic research in the disciplines of business/management, project management, and history. It has also become embedded within the set of services and products that we provide.

Who We Are?

This is to offer ideas, practices, and solutions from the past as an innovative means of assisting project and business leaders in their efforts to succeed in today’s global marketplace.

Expanded:

  • From the past identify innovative managerial solutions and practices still relevant today, and awaken interesting and relevant ideas that have been forgotten over the years.
  • Build on the past to provide a baseline for evaluating the extent of changes over time, and how “novel” current concepts really are.
  • Critically revisit the past to help understand our contemporary limitations and prevailing pre-conceptions, and to enable us to create a better future.
This is to inspire business and project leaders by closely examining legendary historical case studies but through a modern business/project lens.
This is to:
  • Describe how these historical case studies solved complex problems.
  • Provide valuable insight into solving today’s more challenging problems.
  • Juxtapose challenges met in today’s projects with relevant historical case studies.
  • Show how lessons learned from the past can be put into everyday practical use in organizations today.
  • Inspire as these projects from the past were achieved with less sophisticated technologies.
