Characters in Story

Squadron Leader Roger Bushell

The Leadership provided by Bushell or “Big X” was a gift to the men. His style, knowledge and innate ability to organize provided a plan worth investing time, effort and perhaps one’s life.

SBO (Senior Allied Officer) Group Captain Herbert M Massey

Massey was responsible for all the officers in the camp.

Wally Floody (The Tunnel King)

Floody worked as a gold miner in Timmins, Ont., before the war. During the war he was a lieutenant in the RCAF. Bushell put him in charge of building the tunnels. He was responsible for digging out and shoring up the tunnels through the treacherous sand under the camp with planks from bunks. The tunnels went down 30 feet before levelling off so microphones planted underground wouldn't pick up vibrations from digging.
